Be sure to check Jill's News page for current workshop offerings open to the public.
Since 1998, Jill has been offerering unique workshops in the areas of fiction-writing, creative journaling and free-form art. Her approach accesses both hemispheres of the brain as she draws from both the visual and literary vocabularies. This method makes journaling a fun and useful tool for anyone-- from children who are new to the written word to adults who are trying to access deeper levels of understanding and from art novices to creative professionals. Jill has implemented her workshops in a variety of environments including: schools, libraries, women's shelters, churches and community centers. Programs vary in length and content based upon need. Past offerings have included:
Better Writing Through Art Practices: This workshop stresses skills for state writing assessments for students, but with a creative twist. Students use visual and other sensory processes to gather ideas and organize content for better writing. This workshop is based upon the practice of younger children who use drawing to facilitate early literacy. In later education years, art becomes compartmentalized, thus creating a disadvantage to visual-style learners, many of whom are boys. Jill reintroduces techniques students already know, such as mapping or webbing, and takes them to a new level.
Creative Journaling : Journal writing on a rollercoaster! We discuss personal color codes and ways to vary your practice with art techniques. Hands-on time may include collage, mapping, lights-out journals, emotion painting, and photography.
Playing in the Mud--an Animated Approach to Fiction Writing: Jill uses play techniques to bring spark to story writing. Focus is on character development with emphasis on building stories word by word, sentence by sentence. Activities include drawing your inner-editor monster and putting the protagonist int he pits
Paper Doll Reflections: Originally designed to empower survivors of domestic violence, this workshop has expanded to encompass much more. It functions as a tool for self-esteem, particularly for girls, or as a fiction-writing workshop to illustrate character development. Primary activity includes making a two-sided paper doll.
Jill will create 1/2 day and whole day programs to fit your needs. Rates vary depending on material needed and travel expenses.
