This painting was inspired by an article on "mother trees", that communicate and nurture their "children" through their roots systems. I have a 200+ year old oak tree in front of my house on the edge of Sherwood Forest. I can see younger oak trees surrounding her. In this painting she gets her due. I often think of my forest scenes as altarpieces because my sabbath is spent hiking in nearby woods. As such, I used metallic paints and copper leaf in this painting to relate them to the altarpieces I saw in Italy. This is the "Madonna and Child" of my forest themed altarpieces. This piece looks great on canvas, but it also looks good as a mug.
