This forest scene references the moon without us actually seeing it. Selene is the Roman Goddess of the Moon. The composition of this painting uses the curves of circles and crescents to move the eye. Even the figure in this painting, is curved over a log. Here the curving suggests a surrender--an accepting of what is or a supplication--a giving over to a higher power, which is perhaps hinted at through a shadowy figure in the distance. The moon is constantly changing, not s steady presence. The painting encourages us to go with the flow and surrender to the ever-present swings of change.
