40" x 30" Latex and ceramic paint on canvas. This was a commission from a client who owns one of my Labyrinth (Rose) series. She wanted me to do a painting of a similar style with the subject matter of succulents, which she loves. It has same meditative feel as the rose paintings and a mandala-like quality with an eye at the center. I went to Longwood Gardens to sketch and take photos for this painting. I never would have thought of painting succulents, but I don't think it will be the last time I visit the subject. I love their geometry and rhythms. The painting is done on a black canvas with high-end interior paints originally intended for faux finishes in homes. The quality of the paint gives both texture and luster. I finish these paintings by buffing them with a tinted wax which adds to the dimensional quality while adding a soft, warm sheen.
